‘Dallas to Cancun’: Mavericks trolled by billboard ahead of Game 5 against Clippers

NBA

The LA Clippers and Dallas Mavericks are tied at two games apiece in their Western Conference first-round series heading into Game 5 on Wednesday.

One of the billboards outside Crypto.com Arena seemed to troll the Mavericks and their fans ahead of the game.

If the Mavericks lose, the Clippers would still need to win Game 6 on Friday (9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN) to advance. But it’s never too early to do some trolling.

According to ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk, the advertisement is scheduled to be taken down before Game 5.

“The billboard at L.A. Live is not owned or operated by the Clippers. We have the utmost respect for our opponents and in no way endorse this message,” the Clippers said in a statement.

The “Cancun” joke, which originated in 1998, refers to the location being a vacation destination after a playoff loss.

During the Los Angeles Lakers‘ Western Conference finals series against the Utah Jazz, then-Lakers guard Nick Van Exel broke a team huddle with a “1-2-3 … Cancun!” chant. The Lakers were on the brink of being swept by Utah.

Dallas will look to limit its chances of a trip to Cancun with a win Wednesday.
