England-capped McConnochie in Scotland 6N squad

Rugby

Gregor Townsend has named four uncapped players in Scotland’s squad for the Six Nations with England-capped wing Ruaridh McConnochie included.

McConnochie played for England at the 2019 Rugby World Cup but hasn’t featured since. Due to World Rugby regulations, this gap between caps means he can switch allegiance and Scotland have called him up for their Six Nations campaign.

The 31-year-old Bath winger has a Scottish father. He is included alongside Leicester Tigers lock Cameron Henderson, Munster fly-half Ben Healy (who is joining Edinburgh on loan), and Glasgow Warriors centre Stafford McDowall.

There are also recalls for Saracens’ wing Sean Maitland, who has 15 tries from his 53 caps, and centre Huw Jones, who re-joined Glasgow Warriors this season.

Finn Russell, who coach Gregor Townsend dropped before the autumn internationals late last year but who then won a recall and starred for Scotland, is also in the squad, which will be captained by Jamie Ritchie.

Scotland open their Six Nations campaign against England on Feb. 4 at Twickenham before hosting Wales a week later. They then travel to France on Feb. 26 before hosting Wales and finishing up against Italy.
