Wilder-Fury II has rematch clause – Warren

Boxing

Heavyweight world titlist Deontay Wilder and lineal champion Tyson Fury will meet in a rematch on Saturday, but the fight could become a trilogy, the Briton’s promoter Frank Warren has said.

The pair drew on points in their first meeting in December 2018 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, where Fury outboxed Wilder for long stretches despite the American scoring two knockdowns — the second coming in the 12th round after a straight right was followed by a massive left hook that sent Fury to the canvas.

Wilder (42-0-1, 41 KOs), 34, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Fury (29-0-1, 20 KOs), 31, of England, will face off again for the second time on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and Warren has said that there is a trilogy clause in the fight contract.

“The loser has 30 days to call on the rematch and that has to be accepted,” Warren told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Since their first meeting, Wilder and Fury have won two fights each.

Saturday’s fight is a joint pay-per-view between ESPN, with whom Top Rank has an exclusive deal, and Fox, which has a deal with Premier Boxing Champions, where Wilder fights.

“This is probably the most anticipated heavyweight title fight in the last 20 years,” Warren added. “It’s a fantastic fight. A big puncher against a consummate boxer.

“It’s a bit like Muhammad Ali v George Foreman years ago — similar styles.

“What’s important about this fight is that they are both at the top of their game. It’s not like the young guy fighting the old guy, passing on the baton. These guys are at the top of their game and it doesn’t get any better than this if you are a boxing fan.”
