Jim Bob Cooter is expected to be named offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Monday.
Cooter, 38, was previously an offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions for three seasons (2016-18). He had taken over the role on an interim basis in 2015 after the Lions fired Joe Lombardi during the season.
Last season, Cooter was the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ passing game coordinator. The previous season, he was a consultant with the Philadelphia Eagles on a staff that included then-offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who was hired as the Colts’ new head coach last week.
Cooter began his NFL coaching career with the Colts, serving as an offensive assistant from 2009 to 2011. In 14 seasons as an NFL assistant, he has been on staffs with the Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Lions, New York Jets, Eagles and Jaguars.
When Steichen was hired by Indianapolis, he presented the team a detailed plan for addressing the quarterback position, with the Colts poised to select one of the top college prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. Indianapolis holds the No. 4 overall pick.
Quarterbacks Cooter has worked with include Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford and Trevor Lawrence.
