Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill is leaving Los Angeles to reunite with Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and become Miami’s defensive pass-game coordinator, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Hill, 44, was Fangio’s top target and, out of respect for his former boss, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley allowed his defensive coordinator to leave for Miami.
Hill has been the Chargers’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He was the defensive backs coach on Fangio’s staff with the Denver Broncos in 2019 and ’20. Staley also worked on Fangio’s Broncos staff in 2019 as the outside linebackers coach.
The Dolphins officially hired Fangio as their new defensive coordinator last week.
Hill, who was a defensive back in the NFL for 10 seasons, played for the Dolphins from 2006-08. He also was an assistant defensive backs coach with the Dolphins in 2018.
Hill’s departure means the Chargers will have replaced both their offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator after the season. The Chargers fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi last month and replaced him with former Dallas offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
