Toss Sri Lanka chose to bowl vs India

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first in the first ODI, in Guwahati. Rohit Sharma said India would have chased too, largely because substantial dew tends to form in the evening at this ground, which makes gripping the ball more difficult for bowlers.

Sri Lanka made one change to the side that played the third T20I, bringing in young left-arm spinning allrounder Dunith Wellalage for spinner Maheesh Theekshana. Although Theekshana is a key part of the men’s T20 team, Wellalage has a better ODI bowling record in nine matches so far and also strengthens the team’s batting. Left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka was given his ODI debut and plays ahead of Lahiru Kumara.
India, meanwhile, had no room for Suryakumar Yadav in their XI, despite his spectacular T20 form – he scored a century in the third T20I. KL Rahul, who will keep wicket, and Shreyas Iyer, are in their middle order instead. And as Rohit had indicated on the eve of the game, Shubman Gill was preferred as his opening partner ahead of Ishan Kishan, despite the left-hander scoring a double-century in India’s previous ODI against Bangladesh in December. Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel headline the spin department, and Umran Malik plays ahead of Arshdeep Singh.

Weather is not expected to interrupt this match. Sri Lanka desperately need to win these matches, as they seek to earn qualification for the ODI World Cup later this year. As hosts, India qualify automatically for the tournament.

India 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 KL Rahul (wk) 5 Shreyas Iyer, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Yuzvendra Chahal, 9 Mohammed Siraj, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Umran Malik

Sri Lanka 1 Kusal Mendis (wk), 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Avishka Fernando, 4 Dhananjaya de Silva, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Dasun Shanaka (capt.), 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Chamika Karunaratne, 9 Dunith Wellalage, 10 Kasun Rajitha, 11 Dilshan Madushanka
