Sources: Hawks promote assistant Fields to GM

NBA

The Atlanta Hawks are promoting assistant GM Landry Fields to the title of general manager, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Fields, 33, will continue to work under president of basketball operations Travis Schlenk in the Hawks’ front office. The promotion will become effective July 1, sources said.

Fields has ascended quickly in his front-office career, parlaying a five-year playing career with the New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors into front-office roles with the San Antonio Spurs and Hawks. Fields joined the Hawks in 2020 as an assistant GM, and now elevates to the GM role to continue working with Schlenk.

Schlenk has rebuilt the Hawks roster since his hiring in 2017, significantly elevating the talent level and reaching the Eastern Conference finals in 2021. Schlenk has been promoted and had his contract extended three times since his hiring.

The Hawks are expected to be one of the most active teams in trade talks ahead of the June 23rd draft and free agency in July.
