Tigers’ Teheran lands on IL after Friday scratch

MLB

Detroit Tigers right-hander Julio Teheran has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain after he was scratched from Friday’s start.

Teheran was throwing his final pitches in the bullpen before Friday’s game against the Cleveland Indians when he felt tightness in his right triceps. He told pitching coach Chris Fetter and manager A.J. Hinch he could pitch, but the team scratched him to avoid further injury.

The IL move is retroactive to Wednesday.

The team replaced Teheran with left-handed reliever Derek Holland, who allowed three runs, including a two-run homer to Franmil Reyes in the first inning, in 2 2/3 innings during the 4-1 loss.

With Teheran likely to miss at least one turn in the rotation, Michael Fulmer is expected to take his spot. Fulmer pitched four innings against the Indians, allowing a solo homer to Reyes and an infield single while striking out five.

Fulmer, the American League Rookie of the Year in 2016 and an All-Star in 2017, has been working his way back after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2019.

The 28-year-old was excited about the possibility of starting again.

“If need be, yeah. Obviously, it’s not my call,” Fulmer said after Friday’s outing — his longest since 2018. “I’ll do whatever A.J. needs. But I feel like I’m good. I feel like I’ve learned a lot of stuff if I have to take that position.”

In a related move, the Tigers called up right-hander Alex Lange, who has yet to pitch in the majors.

Teheran came to spring training as a non-roster invitee with the Tigers. He beat Cleveland in his debut last week, allowing one run and four hits in five innings.

The 30-year-old Teheran made nine starts for the Los Angeles Angels in the shortened 2020 season. He spent the previous nine seasons with the Atlanta Braves.
