OKC’s Gilgeous-Alexander out until mid-April

NBA

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will miss at least a couple of more weeks dealing with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, as coach Mark Daigneault said Wednesday the star guard will be re-evaluated in mid-April.

“That will be our next touchpoint with him,” Daigneault said. “He’s progressing and doing his thing.”

Gilgeous-Alexander hasn’t played since March 22 because of the injury. The Thunder had been mindful of Gilgeous-Alexander’s workload this season to try to avoid this issue because of the extremely short offseason following the bubble. There’s also the possibility Gilgeous-Alexander will play for the Canadian national team this summer, combined with another shortened offseason as the NBA aims to get back on its traditional schedule of September to June.

While the Thunder have transitioned toward focusing on player development, with players like Al Horford sitting for the rest of the season, the expectation is for Gilgeous-Alexander to return at some point to play in at least a handful of games. The Thunder are 19-27, currently 13th in the West.

Gilgeous-Alexander, 22, is having a breakout season, averaging 23.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 35 games.
