Chelsea agree deal to sign Timo Werner

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

Werner, 24, will join the Premier League side in July, subject to a medical, after agreeing personal terms.

“I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club,” Werner said.

“I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart. I look forward to next season with my new teammates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.”

The Germany international has already scored 32 goals and set up a further 13 in 43 appearances for Leipzig this season in all competitions.

Sources told ESPN earlier this month that Chelsea were closing in on the signing of Werner after agreeing to activate the RB Leipzig striker’s release clause.

Frank Lampard‘s side moved ahead of Liverpool in the race for the striker by matching the asking price.

Liverpool were long considered front-runners for Werner’s signature given persistent rumours of contact between the two clubs and his admiration for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Chelsea’s offer of more game time was enough to persuade him not to go to Anfield, where Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are an established front three.

Chelsea, by contrast, are rebuilding, with Hakim Ziyech due to arrive from Ajax, while Pedro and Willian are set to depart on free transfers.
