England’s May to rejoin Gloucester next season

England wing Jonny May will rejoin Gloucester from Leicester Tigers at the end of the season, both clubs announced on Saturday.

May, 30, has scored 30 tries in 44 appearances since joining Leicester three years ago.

With his contract set to expire this summer, May said he would consider a move away and has now signed a new deal with Premiership rivals Gloucester.

“I’m proud of my time at Leicester Tigers,” he told the Leicester’s website. “What an amazing experience to have played for such a great club.

“It really has developed my game and it’s brought the best out in me as a player. I gave 100% every time I put the shirt on and I have no regrets.

“For numerous reasons it hasn’t worked out for me to stay on at Leicester Tigers, which is a shame.

“It’s been a challenging few years but I have made some great mates and worked with some brilliant people.”

May has scored 29 international tries and was part of the team which lost to South Africa in the 2019 World Cup final.

“Once I had made the decision to leave Leicester there was only ever one club I really wanted to play for. I’m grateful to David Humphreys and everyone at Gloucester Rugby who have found a way for me to rejoin,” he said in a statement on Gloucester’s website.

“I’m very excited about being back in cherry and white playing at Kingsholm again.”

Gloucester director of rugby Humphreys said the deal was completed during the lockdown with the Gallagher Premiership suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus crisis.

“Our supporters will have watched his performances for England over the last couple of seasons, and will be looking forward to watching him back playing at Kingsholm for Gloucester,” Humphreys said.

“There’s no doubt he’s a world class player, who would be an asset to any side. It’ll be a tremendous help for them to have someone with Jonny’s experience to learn from.”
