Astros put McCormick on IL with fractured hand

MLB

The Houston Astros placed outfielder Chas McCormick on the 10-day injured list Thursday due to a small fracture on his right hand.

The move is retroactive to Wednesday, one day after McCormick sustained the injury after running into the right-field wall while chasing down a foul ball in Houston’s loss to the Oakland Athletics.

“It’s really disappointing,” said McCormick, who returned from a short minor league stint earlier this month. “I just want to be out there trying to help the team win, especially toward the end of the season and going into the playoffs. It’s a disappointing season overall and not the way I wanted it to happen because I have been feeling good. … I’m feeling like myself finally, and this happened. But I’ll be back.”

McCormick, 29, is batting .211 with five homers and 27 RBIs in 94 games this season.

The Astros also recalled infielder Grae Kessinger and left-hander Bryan King from Sugar Land and sent right-hander Nick Hernandez to the Triple-A club.

Kessinger, 27, is 0-for-15 with five strikeouts in 15 games with the Astros this season. King, 27, is 1-0 with a 2.05 ERA in 23 relief appearances with Houston in 2024.
