Smith 4th Dodgers catcher to post 3-homer game

MLB

LOS ANGELES — Will Smith homered three times to help the Los Angeles Dodgers rally to an 8-5 win against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

He’s just the fourth Dodgers catcher to hit three in one game, joining Yasmani Grandal (2016) and Hall of Famers Mike Piazza (1996) and Roy Campanella (1950).

“Those are obviously really good catchers,” Smith said. “Just to be mentioned is humbling.”

The homers were Smith’s 12th, 13th and 14th of the season.

His first two came on the first pitch from Aaron Civale in the first and third innings, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. The third was on the fifth pitch by reliever Bryan Hudson with two outs in the seventh and tied the score at 5-5.

Smith walked in his other plate appearance.

“Going to right-center field, then to go to left field and then hit one off the foul pole, really impressive,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He’s just so consistent and he just doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves as being one of the top two catchers in the game.”
