MLB

The Kansas City Royals put right-hander Dan Altavilla on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right oblique strain.

Altavilla is 0-1 with a 14.73 ERA in five appearances (one start) in his first season with the Royals. On Sunday, his 98 mph fastball fractured the left wrist of Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts, a pitch Altavilla told MLB.com that he threw with “absolutely no intent.”

Altavilla, 31, is 8-8 with a 4.36 ERA in 124 games (one start) with the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres and Royals.

Kansas City recalled right-hander Steven Cruz from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding transaction.

Cruz, 25, registered a 4.97 ERA and no decisions in 10 games (four starts) with the Royals in the 2023 season. He is 4-1 with a 4.33 ERA and one save in 24 relief appearances this season at Omaha.
