Marlins place RHP Sanchez (shoulder) on IL

The Miami Marlins placed right-hander Sixto Sanchez on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right shoulder inflammation.

In a corresponding move, the Marlins recalled rookie right-hander Emmanuel Ramirez from Triple-A Jacksonville.

Sanchez, 25, has a history of shoulder injuries, including two surgeries that caused him to miss three seasons from 2021-23. He is 0-3 this season with a 6.06 ERA in 14 games (seven starts).

He last pitched on Friday but was pulled after allowing two runs and four hits in four-plus innings in an 8-2 victory over the visiting Texas Rangers. Manager Skip Schumaker said Sanchez throwing with reduced velocity figured into the decision to place him on the injured list.

“I just felt like from the get-go it was 87 mph again,” Schumaker said after Friday’s game. “It’s OK if it’s 87 if he’s used to throwing like 89 to 90. But when you have flashing 95-96, and then you are throwing 87, I just want to make sure everything’s OK and he’s not trying to get through something and just being up front with us, as well.”

Miami obtained Sanchez as part of a trade that sent catcher J.T. Realmuto to the Philadelphia Phillies in February 2019. Sanchez is 3-5 with a 4.70 ERA in 74⅔ innings over 21 games (14 starts) in his career.

“I’m feeling good,” Sanchez said via interpreter Will Nadal after Friday’s game. “I think the arm feels good. I think it could be something mental. But I’m trying to block that out of my head and just make sure that I’m going out there and trying to prepare as best as I can.”

Ramirez, 29, has a 1.59 ERA with five strikeouts and no walks over 5⅔ innings in five relief appearances for the Marlins this season.
