Tigers’ Carpenter goes on IL with back injury

MLB

The Detroit Tigers placed outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a back injury.

Carpenter, 26, is dealing with lumbar spine inflammation. His IL designation is retroactive to Monday.

Carpenter is batting .283 with eight homers and 29 RBIs in 50 games in his third season with the Tigers.

The former 19th-round draft pick is a career .275 hitter with 34 home runs and 103 RBIs through 199 games.

Detroit recalled outfielder Akil Baddoo from Triple-A Toledo to replace Carpenter on the 26-man roster.

Baddoo, 25, tripled and scored a run in his only previous at-bat with the Tigers this season on May 12 against the Houston Astros.

Baddoo is batting .253 with six homers, 22 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 40 games this year at Toledo.
