Red Sox P Whitlock (elbow) out rest of season

MLB

Boston Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock told reporters Saturday that he will miss the remainder of the season and undergo an elbow procedure.

Whitlock, 27, is set to undergo an internal brace procedure that has a one-year recovery time as opposed to the potential 15-month recovery time from Tommy John surgery. He had a Tommy John procedure done in 2019 when he was a minor leaguer in the New York Yankees‘ system.

Whitlock originally went on the injured list in April with an oblique injury. He made just four starts this season, going 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in 18⅓ innings. He last appeared in a game April 16.

In four seasons with Boston, Whitlock is 18-11 with a 3.39 ERA in 103 appearances (23 starts).
