Camila Giorgi confirmed her retirement from tennis with a post on her Instagram story Saturday.

The 2018 Wimbledon quarterfinalist, who won four WTA titles during her career, reached a high of 26 in the rankings. She had sparked rumors about her status after appearing as retired on the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) website last week.

“I am happy to formally announce retirement from my tennis career,” Giorgi wrote in both English and Italian. “I am so grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years. I cherish all the beautiful memories.

“There have been many inaccurate rumors about my future plans, so I look forward to providing more information about exciting opportunities ahead. It is a joy to share my life with you, and let’s continue this journey together.”

Giorgi, 32, of Italy, last played at the Miami Open in March and had never spoken publicly about any impending plans to walk away from the sport. Per the ITIA website, her retirement paperwork was filed on May 7.

On Saturday, La Gazzetta dello Sport, an Italian newspaper, reported Giorgi and her family are being investigated by the Guardia di Finanza, a national law enforcement agency specializing in financial crimes, due to tax evasion. The same report said Giorgi and her family — which includes her father, Sergio, who was also her coach throughout her career — have left Europe and are now living in the United States.

Giorgi is set to appear for a preliminary hearing in Italy in July as part of an unrelated investigation into allegations that she forged her COVID-19 vaccination documentation. Giorgi denied those claims in 2023.
