Injury-plagued Red Sox put Whitlock on IL

MLB

The Boston Red Sox, already dealing with multiple pitching injuries, placed right-hander Garrett Whitlock on the 15-day injured list with a strained left oblique Wednesday.

Whitlock, who is 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in four starts this season, left Tuesday’s game after four innings in Boston’s 10-7 loss to the Cleveland Guardians.

Left-hander Joe Jacques was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to fill Whitlock’s roster spot.

Lucas Giolito and prospect Chris Murphy have had Tommy John surgery this spring and won’t return until 2025. Nick Pivetta also is on the injured list with a strained elbow flexor.
