Steelers release WR Robinson after one season

NFL

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers continued their saving spree Friday, releasing veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson in a move that trims $10 million against the salary cap.

Coupled with the release earlier Friday of cornerback Patrick Peterson, the Steelers created nearly $17 million in additional cap space before the start of free agency next week.

The Steelers acquired Robinson in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams in April 2023, swapping seventh-round picks in addition to picking up the veteran.

Robinson wasn’t particularly productive in an overall stagnant offense, recording 280 receiving yards on 34 catches, his lowest output outside of an injury-shortened 2017 season. He also averaged a career-low 8.2 yards per reception.

Although Robinson was a key contributor as a run-blocking wide receiver and a steady voice in a young wide receiver room, his high cap hit ultimately spelled the end of his time in Pittsburgh.
