Battleships, ‘Balled Out’ and more from Week 5 CFB trolls

NCAAF

With college football conference play in full swing across the country, team social media pages got off another round of quality trolls.

After a 5-7 campaign in 2023, the Navy Midshipmen are off to a hot start this fall, boasting a 4-0 mark after dispatching the UAB Blazers 41-18 on the road.

Navy’s social media contrasted the two schools’ respective mascots in a graphic after the game, showing a towering battleship looming over a dragon lying on the beach.

Here’s a look at some of the best postgame jabs from Week 5 of the college football season.

TCU 38, Kansas 27

The TCU Horned Frogs bounced back from last week’s 66-42 defeat against SMU by grabbing their first conference victory of the season in a 38-27 decision against the Kansas Jayhawks at Arrowhead Stadium. The Horned Frogs amassed over 500 yards of total offense, with wideout Jack Bech leading the way with 10 catches, 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

After the game, TCU’s social media team paid homage to Kansas’ famous “Rock Chalk, Jayhawk” chant with a witty caption.

James Madison 63, Ball State 7

One week after a remarkable offensive outing in a 70-50 high-flying win over North Carolina, James Madison kept its high-scoring momentum rolling (and added some defensive success) in a 63-7 pasting of the Ball State Cardinals. Quarterback Alonza Barnett III threw for 280 yards and five scores in the victory.

The Dukes trolled Ball State with a clever caption following the game’s conclusion.

UNLV 59, Fresno State 14

Despite no shortage of off-field discussion following quarterback Matthew Sluka’s midweek decision to redshirt, the UNLV Rebels rolled on with a 59-14 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs to stay undefeated.

The win was UNLV’s first of the year against a Mountain West foe, with the Rebels figuring to be a major factor in the conference title race. Currently tied for first place in the Mountain West with a 1-0 conference record, UNLV referenced its standing with a postgame caption.

Duke 21, North Carolina 20

Rivalry-game wins are always just a little sweeter, and the Duke Blue Devils picked up a major one, dispatching the North Carolina Tar Heels 21-20. The Blue Devils had to dig deep for the win, trailing the game 20-0 midway through the third quarter before scoring three consecutive touchdowns to secure the victory.

Duke’s social media team had a jab ready for the rivalry triumph, parodying the movie “Silence of the Lambs” in a reference to UNC’s ram mascot, Rameses.
