The Arizona Diamondbacks placed star infielder Ketel Marte on the 10-day injured list Monday, a day after he aggravated his sprained left ankle on a check swing.
Arizona recalled outfielder Pavin Smith from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.
Marte had missed three straight games before playing Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays as the designated hitter. He wasn’t in Sunday’s lineup but entered the game against the Rays as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and went down to the ground after a check swing and needed assistance to walk off the field.
Marte, a two-time All-Star, leads the Diamondbacks in batting average (.298), hits (130), home runs (30) and RBIs (81) this season.
Smith is batting .270 (17-for-63) with three homers and 16 RBIs in 29 games this season. In parts of five seasons with the Diamondbacks, he is batting .242 with 31 homers and 132 RBIs in 330 games.
The Diamondbacks lost to the Rays 8-7 in 12 innings for their third straight defeat. The Rays’ three-game sweep of Arizona marked the Diamondbacks’ first three-game skid since June 26-28.
The Diamondbacks hold an NL wild-card spot after going 28-13 since the start of July.
