Sources: Yankees land OF Chisholm from Marlins

MLB

The New York Yankees are in agreement with the Marlins on a trade for Miami outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN on Saturday.

The Marlins are receiving three prospects, including Triple-A catcher Agustin Ramirez, sources said.

Chisholm, 26, fills an offensive need for New York as infielder DJ LeMahieu and outfielder Alex Verdugo have struggled mightily. LeMahieu is hitting .160 this month and Verdugo hasn’t fared much better, batting .178. Chisholm is hitting .249 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs on the season.

Chisholm also has struggled in July but he provides speed to a team that ranks 29th in stolen bases. The newest Yankee has 22 stolen bases this year, about half the total of the entire New York roster.

Chisholm is likely to play in the infield and outfield on his new team.

The move probably won’t be the last for New York — which is scouring the market for pitchers — but Chisholm might be able to provide help on offense, which has been inconsistent for the Yankees since Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo went down with injuries.

Chisholm is in his fifth season with Miami, compiling a .749 OPS during his time there. He’s a former All-Star, making the team in 2022.

Chisholm has two years of team control left after this season before becoming a free agent in 2027.

Ramirez is hitting .269 with 20 home runs this year split between Double-A and Triple-A.
