Sources: Jets’ Reddick skipping camp over deal

NFL

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets defensive end Haason Reddick, who has not landed the new contract he has been seeking, is not planning to report to training camp Tuesday with the rest of his team, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Reddick is in the final year of his contract and is scheduled to make $14.5 million this season.

Reddick will be fined a mandatory $50,000 per day during his holdout, according to the collective bargaining agreement. The fine can’t be waived.

Looking to have his contract upgraded, Reddick skipped the entire offseason program, including the mandatory minicamp in June. The Jets were surprised by Reddick’s stance even though his side had made it clear before the trade that he wanted a new contract.

In 2022, Reddick signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Eagles. With 50.5 sacks over the last four seasons, fourth-most in the NFL, he felt he had outperformed the deal. The $15 million average per year ranked 20th among edge players, according to ESPN’s Roster Management System.

At the time of the trade, the Jets were under the impression that Reddick, who turns 30 on Sept. 22, was content to play out the final year of his contract and hit free agency. There may have been a miscommunication or perhaps Reddick changed his mind. Either way, it was an odd look for both sides.

Reddick will play a major role for the Jets, who finished third in yards allowed in 2023. He will start on the four-man defensive line, led by Pro Bowl tackle Quinnen Williams. In Reddick, the Jets have their most accomplished edge rusher in 20 years.

The Jets acquired Reddick after losing sack leader Bryce Huff to the Eagles in free agency. The Jets traded a 2026 conditional third-round pick for Reddick; it improves to a second-round pick if he plays 67.5% of the snaps and records at least 10 sacks in 2024.

With Reddick poised to start, the Jets, citing financial reasons, traded defensive end John Franklin-Myers to the Denver Broncos in April.
