Scotland beat USA; Van der Merwe equals record

Scotland winger Duhan van der Merwe equalled his country’s record for the most tries while Ewan Ashman scored a hattrick as they beat hosts United States 42-7 in their test at Audi Field on Friday.

Van der Merwe opened the scoring after six minutes to equal Stuart Hogg’s 27-try record but it was hooker Ashman who led the scoring with three tries in the first half, as Scotland repeatedly went over from lineout mauls.

Scotland, playing a second game on their month-long tour of the Americas after thrashing Canada in Ottawa last weekend, finished with a total of six tries. George Horne and Matt Fagerson scored the other two, while Adam Hastings kicked over five conversions on his return to the Scots’ lineup after a two-year injury layoff.

The hosts’ only score was a first half try from centre Tommaso Boni, converted by AJ McGinty, in a test characterised by numerous handling errors.

Scotland next take on Chile in Santiago on July 20 and conclude their tour against Uruguay in Montevideo one week later.
