Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey Mize is expected to be placed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday.
Hinch told MLB Network Radio that the team must “get him symptom free.”
“Sometimes that takes a short period, sometimes it’s longer,” Hinch said. “He’s not going to be able to do a ton until his leg gets back underneath him. I don’t know how long that is.”
Mize pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings on Sunday in a 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels to move to 2-6 (4.23 ERA) on the season. He was removed in the sixth inning with what initially was called a cramp in his left hamstring.
The No. 1 overall pick of the 2018 MLB Draft, Mize is 9-19 with a 4.28 ERA in 55 starts for Detroit. He missed most of the 2022 season and all of 2023 due to Tommy John surgery and back surgery.
