Hawks dealing Murray to Pelicans, sources say

NBA

The New Orleans Pelicans are adding Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray to their backcourt, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Friday.

The Pelicans are sending veteran forward Larry Nance Jr., second-year guard Dyson Daniels, a 2025 first-round pick via the Los Angeles Lakers and the least favorable of a 2027 first-round pick from either the Milwaukee Bucks or the Pelicans to Atlanta for the 27-year-old Murray, who just completed his second season in Atlanta.

Murray averaged a career-high 22.5 points in 2023-24 for the Hawks while also making a career-best 201 3-pointers. He averaged 6.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds while sharing the backcourt with Trae Young.

Atlanta sent three first-round picks to San Antonio in 2022 for Murray to build its potential backcourt of the future but it never panned out the way the team hoped.

The year prior as the lead guard in San Antonio, Murray averaged 21.1 points, 9.2 assists, 8.3 rebounds and a league-leading 2.0 steals per game.

Since he’s moved to Atlanta, Murray has seen his 3-point shot develop in a big way.

In five complete seasons with San Antonio — Murray missed the 2018-19 season with a torn ACL — he made 218 3-pointers while shooting a 33.0% from distance. He hit 334 in his two seasons with Atlanta, topping out at 36.3% this season.
