Sources: Raptors’ Barnes to ink max rookie deal

NBA

Toronto Raptors All-Star guard Scottie Barnes intends to sign a five-year maximum rookie extension that could be worth up to $270 million, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday.

Barnes will become the highest-paid player in Raptors history.

Barnes’ agent, Bill Duffy of WME Basketball, met with Toronto executives Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster to land the deal on the 2022 NBA Rookie of the Year, sources told Wojnarowski.

The Raptors are reshaping the roster around Barnes and now secure him on a deal that he’ll sign on July 6th, sources told Wojnarowski.

Barnes, who will turn 23 in August, made his first All-Star appearance this past season in his third year with the Raptors, averaging 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks. He and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo were the only players in the league this season to average at least one per game in all five of those statistical categories.

Barnes missed the final 22 games of last season due to hand surgery.

The 6-foot-10 Barnes was picked fourth overall by the Raptors in the 2022 NBA draft, after they fell into the lottery following a 2020-21 season where all home games were played in Tampa, Florida, due to COVID-19 restrictions in Canada.

Barnes had spent a single year at Florida State before entering the NBA draft.
