Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah needs season-ending elbow surgery.

Manager John Schneider made the announcement ahead of Toronto’s series opener against the host Oakland Athletics on Friday night. Still to be determined is whether Manoah will need Tommy John surgery or an internal brace procedure when it takes place June 17, but either way, the right-hander won’t pitch again this season.

Manoah has been on the injured list since leaving a start against the Chicago White Sox on May 29 with elbow discomfort. He ended up making just five starts this season after starting the year on the IL with shoulder inflammation, going 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA.

Manoah was a breakout star for Toronto in 2022, going 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA in 31 starts. He made the AL All-Star team and finished third in Cy Young Award voting. But he struggled last year, going 3-9 with a 5.87 ERA in 19 starts and was optioned to the minors twice.

In other moves Friday, Toronto designated Cavan Biggio for assignment. The 29-year-old is hitting just .200 with two home runs and nine RBIs this season.

In the corresponding roster move, the Blue Jays recalled infielder Spencer Horwitz from Triple-A.
