Tigers’ Olson leaves 8-3 loss with hip contusion

MLB

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Detroit Tigers starter Reese Olson left Monday’s 8-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals in the third inning after being struck by a line drive. The team later announced Olson had suffered a right hip contusion.

Olson was stunned by Michael Massey‘s sharp liner, which hit him in the upper right thigh area. The right-hander stood with his hands at his hips while catcher Jake Rogers retrieved the ball.

After a few warmup pitches in front of the Tigers’ training staff, manager AJ Hinch removed Olson from the contest with Detroit trailing 2-0. He threw 2⅔ innings, allowing the two runs and five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Massey homered in the second inning for the first long ball given up this season by Olson after 48⅓ innings, snapping the majors’ longest homerless streak.

Olson was credited with the loss, falling to 0-5.
