Former Florida Atlantic star guard Johnell Davis, one of the best players in the transfer portal, announced his commitment to Arkansas on Wednesday.

Davis is still going through the NBA draft process and has multiple team workouts lined up for the next few weeks, sources said. He will find out whether he will be invited to the NBA draft combine later this week. The 6-foot-4 guard tested the NBA draft waters last year, participating in the G League Elite Camp, but ultimately returned to Florida Atlantic and had the best season of his career.

He shared AAC Player of the Year honors after averaging career highs across the board: 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists, while shooting 41.4% from 3-point range. In FAU’s biggest win of the season, Davis went for 35 points and nine rebounds to lead the Owls to a win over Arizona in Las Vegas.

He scored 30 or more points on two other occasions this past season, putting up 30 against UAB and 34 against UTSA in an overtime win.

Davis also played a key role on FAU’s Final Four team in 2022-23, averaging 13.8 points and 5.4 rebounds and moving into the starting lineup for the final 13 games of the season. He had 29 points and 12 rebounds in the NCAA tournament second-round win over Fairleigh Dickinson.

Florida Atlantic lost all five starters to the transfer portal or graduation after head coach Dusty May left to replace Juwan Howard at Michigan. May was replaced by Baylor assistant John Jakus.

Meanwhile, Arkansas coach John Calipari continues to rebuild a roster that was empty when he took over in Fayetteville. Davis is the premier pickup thus far, but he joins a group that includes Tennessee transfer Jonas Aidoo, Kentucky transfer Zvonimir Ivisic and former Kentucky commits Boogie Fland, Karter Knox and Billy Richmond, all top-40 recruits.
