William & Mary has fired men’s basketball coach Dane Fischer after five seasons, the school announced Sunday morning.
Fisher went 56-91 during his time at the helm.
“Coach Fischer is a person of high character and integrity, and I am grateful for all he has done for our student-athletes. However, the time has come for change in our program,” athletic director Brian Mann said. “As a university, we hold ourselves to the highest standards and are committed to competitive excellence in all our varsity athletics programs. My focus now turns to identifying the right person to uphold those standards as our next men’s basketball coach.”
Fischer took over in 2019 for Tony Shaver, who had finished above .500 in CAA play in six straight seasons before his ousting. The first-year head coach carried over that momentum into the 2019-20 season, leading the Tribe to a second-place finish in the CAA standings, going 21-11 overall and 13-5 in the league.
It has gone downhill from there, however. William & Mary has gone 19-45 in CAA play over the past four seasons, failing to finish better than seventh in the league.
Before becoming W&M’s coach, Fischer was an assistant coach at George Mason, Bucknell and Rider.
