Round-by-round: Jake Paul wins, Amanda Serrano fight canceled last minute

Boxing

San Juan, Puerto Rico, will be at the center of the boxing world Saturday night, when Amanda Serrano defends her WBO, IBF and WBA featherweight world titles against Nina Meinke at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot.

Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KOs), a Puerto Rican fighter living in New York, will square off in a bout scheduled for 12 three-minute rounds, instead of the standard 10 two-minute rounds for title fights in women’s boxing, for the second consecutive time. In October, Serrano defeated Danila Ramos by unanimous decision, with all three scores 120-108, to retain her belts. Serrano has won titles in seven weight classes and has held at least one of the four major featherweight belts since September 2019.

Meinke (18-3, 4 KOs), of Germany, is a former featherweight title contender. She challenged Sarah Mahfoud for the IBF title in 2020 but lost a close unanimous decision. Since then, Meinke has won six straight fights.

In the co-main event, YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul takes on Ryan Bourland in an eight-round cruiserweight bout.

After losing a split decision to Tommy Fury in February 2023, Paul (8-1, 5 KOs), who is from Cleveland but now based in Puerto Rico, has rebounded with victories over former MMA standout Nate Diaz (unanimous decision) and boxer Andre August (first-round KO). Paul has turned his attention to fighting boxers, instead of former MMA athletes, with the goal of becoming a title contender.

Also on the card, Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez defends his WBO junior flyweight world title against fellow Puerto Rican Rene Santiago. Gonzalez (27-3-1, 14 KOs) won the title against Elwin Soto in October 2021 and has made two successful defenses, unanimous decisions over Mark Anthony Barriga and Shokichi Iwata, both in 2022.

In a special attraction, Javon “Wanna” Walton, who earned fame as Ashtray on the television show “Euphoria,” takes on Joshua Torres in a four-round featherweight fight. Walton defeated Moises Guzman Almonte by first-round TKO in the Dominican Republic in December.
