LaLiga boss: Offloading top players will help Barça

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has said Barcelona can solve most of their financial problems by selling “two or three of their top-class players.”

Barça recently had their annual spending limit cut by €66 million ($71m) by LaLiga, going from €270m to €204m.

With squad costs reportedly around €400m, more than double the LaLiga-imposed limit, Barça face a huge challenge to sign and register players in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Asked if Barça could become like Ajax, a club that produces great players but cannot retain them, Tebas said: “That is not going to happen. FC Barcelona will come out of the situation it is in.

“They have two or three top-class players they can sell. If they sell them, then they can solve a great part of their program. With that, they can generate income that doesn’t generate debt interest and can pay players.”

Barça have yet to finalise their plans for the 2024-25 campaign but club sporting director Deco provided some insight on Thursday.

“The idea is not to sell anyone, on the contrary, to try to strengthen ourselves. We don’t need many things, but we don’t want to sell. We are counting on everyone.

Frenkie [de Jong], Pedri, Gavi, [Ronald] Araújo are players for the present and the future. They have a contract and they have to stay more years.”
