MLB

The San Francisco Giants recalled newly acquired infielder Mark Mathias from Triple-A Sacramento in advance of Sunday’s game against the Oakland Athletics.

Mathias fills the roster spot of third baseman Casey Schmitt, who was optioned to the Triple-A club.

Mathias, 29, was acquired from the Seattle Mariners on Monday along with AJ Pollock. He is set to make his Giants debut after he batted .231 with four RBIs in 22 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season. He was selected off waivers by the Mariners on Wednesday but did not play a major league game for Seattle.

In parts of three seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers and Pirates, Mathias is a career .249 hitter in 68 games with six home runs and 28 RBIs.

Schmitt, 24, was batting .205 with two home runs and 25 RBIs in 68 games as a rookie for the Giants this season. He likely was to lose playing time after Thairo Estrada (hand) returned from the injured list Saturday.
