In the highest-scoring playoff game in FCS history, Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. threw a go-ahead 21-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Grimes with 27 seconds left Friday night in a thrilling 66-63 win over Sacramento State in the quarterfinals of the FCS Championship.
The 129 combined points were the most ever in an FCS postseason game, surpassing the 115 points scored in Stephen F. Austin’s 59-56 win over Grambling State in 1989, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
The Cardinals led 59-48 with 8:30 remaining, but the Hornets stormed back with 14 straight points, including a 4-yard score by Marshel Martin that gave Sacramento State a 63-59 lead with 1:43 left.
Scott capped his huge night by engineering a seven-play, 75-yard drive, finding Grimes in the back corner of the end zone for the winning score.
Scott finished 19-of 31 for 219 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 166 yards and two scores, becoming just the second FCS player over the past 25 seasons to pass for 200 yards and four touchdowns and also rush for 150 yards and two touchdowns in one game, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Prairie View A&M’s Jalen Morton pulled the feat in 2018 against Alabama State.
