NEW YORK — U.S. Davis Cup captain Mardy Fish will miss the group stage matches in Glasgow, Scotland, next week because he got COVID-19, and Bob Bryan will fill in as acting captain.

“I’m gutted to not be able to be there after putting a ton of work into this team and trying to win for the U.S.,” Fish said in a statement released by the U.S. Tennis Association on Thursday.

Bryan won 16 Grand Slam doubles championships with his twin brother, Mike, and was on the U.S. team that won the Davis Cup title in 2007. He competed in Davis Cup from 2003 to 2020.

In March, Bryan held a coaching role under Fish for a Davis Cup qualifying victory over Colombia.

Frances Tiafoe — who plays in the US Open semifinals Friday — is slated to be part of the American team that will face Britain, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands in Glasgow from Sept. 13 to Sept. 18. Other members of the U.S. roster are Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Jack Sock and Rajeev Ram.

Group stage matches also will be held in Bologna, Italy; Valencia, Spain; and Hamburg, Germany.

The top two teams from each group advance to the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain, from Nov. 22 to Nov. 27.
