Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale injured his throwing hand when he was struck by a comebacker during the first inning of Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees.
Sale was hit by a line drive from Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks before walking off the field holding up his injured hand.
The 33-year-old Sale was making only his second start of 2022 after missing the first three months of the season because of a fracture in his right rib cage. He has made only 11 starts for the Red Sox since 2019.
He was replaced in Sunday’s game by Hirokazu Sawamura. Sale was charged with three runs (two earned) on two hits while facing only six batters.
