Twins bolster rotation, acquire Gray from Reds

The Minnesota Twins acquired right-hander Sonny Gray from the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

In exchange for Gray, the Reds received right-hander Chase Petty, the Twins’ 2021 first-round pick. The Twins also received minor league right-hander Francis Peguero in the trade.

Gray, 32, was 7-9 with a 4.19 ERA in 26 starts for the Reds last season. In nine seasons he is 82-72 with a 3.61 ERA.

Petty, 18, appeared in three games for the Twins’ Rookie League team and had a 5.40 ERA in five innings pitched.

Gray is under contract this season for $10.17 million. The Twins also will hold a club option for the 2023 season on Gray that is worth $12 million.
