A UFC fighter says a heart issue is the main cause of a fainting spell prior to his scheduled fight over the weekend.
Trevin Giles said Monday in an Instagram video that doctors informed him he had “irregularities” in his heart and said he is seeking an appointment with a cardiologist. Giles passed out right before he was supposed to walk out for a fight with Kevin Holland at UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs. Shahbazyan on Saturday in Las Vegas.
The bout was promptly canceled by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, though Giles said he felt fine immediately afterward and still wanted to compete. Giles was taken to a hospital and was held overnight for further testing. Giles flew home to Houston on Sunday night.
“They ended up telling me that I have some irregularities in my heart and that seemed to be at the center of the issues I was having on fight night,” Giles said Monday. … “I’m trying to get with a cardiologist so we can get everything cleared up.”
Giles (12-2) is coming off a Fight of the Night performance at UFC 247 on Feb. 8, courtesy of a split decision win over James Krause. The 27-year-old middleweight is also an officer with the Houston Police Department. Giles called the whole situation “disappointing.”
The UFC is seeking an opponent for Holland for this coming weekend’s Fight Night card.
