Sergio Sanchez scores must-see KO, Edwin Palomares overpowers Carlos Ornelas

Boxing

Featherweight Edwin Palomares scored a fifth-round stoppage of Carlos Ornelas with an accumulation of punches in what has to be considered an upset Saturday night on the Emanuel Navarrete-Uriel Lopez undercard in Mexico City.

A body punch in Round 5 forced Ornelas to take a knee. Soon thereafter, his corner waved off the fight.

While it seemed that the southpaw Ornelas (25-3, 14 KOs) was the superior technician, he was slowly worn down by the steady pressure from Palomares (13-3-1, 4 KOs), who smothered Ornelas, crowded him inside and unleashed a two-fisted attack.

Early in the fight, there was solid two-way action, with both men landing their share of punches. But by the fourth round, Palomares took control and started to dominate the bout.

By the fifth round, the accumulation of punches was too much for Ornelas. It wasn’t one punch that caused the knockout — but really, all of them. By the end of the fight, Palomares had thrown 476 punches to 246 from Ornelas, outlanding him 166 to 82.

Sanchez scores KO of the year candidate

Sergio Sanchez scored an eye-opening knockout of Gustavo Pina in the third round of their scheduled eight-round featherweight contest. The taller Sanchez (15-1, 9 KOs) was in control from the very beginning of the bout, using his advantages in height and reach, and he consistently timed the oncoming Pina (8-3, 5 KOs) perfectly.

Sanchez sent Pina down with a three-punch combination at the very end of the second. Pina rose from the canvas and saw the end of the round. But in the third round, a hybrid left uppercut/hook from Sanchez landed right on the tip of Pina’s chin. Just like that, the fight was over in devastating fashion.

Garcia outpoints Palomares

Ivan Garcia remained undefeated by scoring a unanimous decision victory over Roberto Palomares in a six-round junior bantamweight bout.

The action was relatively tame throughout, with neither boxer really ever taking control. But it was Garcia (6-0, 3 KOs) who took the win (59-56 and 59-55 twice), outlanding Palomares (5-5-1, 1 KOs) 98 to 70 in total punches.
