England’s Marler cited over Jones groin grab

England prop Joe Marler has been cited after he appeared to grab Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones’ around the groin area during his side’s 33-30 Six Nations victory on Saturday.

After just 10 minutes of the Twickenham game a melee broke out when Wales had a try disallowed for a George North knock-on, and the incident was caught on camera.

Jones called officials to review the incident in his post-match comments, with Marler now having been cited, Six Nations have announced.

It said in a statement: “Joe Marler has been cited for an alleged infringement of Law 9.27 (a player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship — hair pulling or grabbing; Spitting at anyone; grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals (and/or breasts in the case of female players) during the Guinness Six Nations England v Wales match last Saturday.”

Teammate Courtney Lawes has been cited for a dangerous tackle, while Manu Tuilaigi, who received a red card for a high-tackle on Wales wing George North, also faces a disciplinary.

A disciplinary hearing for the three England players will take place in Dublin on Thursday.

Two of the final-round games in this year’s championship have been postponed indefinitely— including France vs. Ireland and Italy vs. England — due to the coronavirus outbreak. Wales’ finale against Scotland is scheduled to go ahead as planned.
